Background
Since the racist murder of Altab Ali on 4th May, 1978, anti-racist activists of the 1970s have always commemorated the anniversary of his death every year. The racist murder of Altab Ali marked a turning point in the Bangladeshi resistance movement of the 1970s. Altab Ali has since become a symbol of resistance, inspiring the Bangladeshi community to fight back against racism successfully and helping us to win the Battle of Brick Lane. This inspiration has fostered a sense of security and dignity among community members.
Following the council's official decision to rename the park 'Altab Ali Park' in 1998, the group has laid wreaths there on 4th May every year. They also invite and encourage anti-racist groups and individuals to participate in discussions that uphold the spirit of resistance against racism in society.
Recognising the need for a more structured approach to their activities, in 2010, the activists of the 1970s established the Altab Ali Foundation. The Foundation aims to expand beyond the annual commemoration of Altab Ali on 4th May and to help future generations understand the significance of the 1970s resistance movement and the inspiration that stemmed from Altab Ali's death. Another key objective of the Foundation is to promote partnerships among voluntary, public, and private sector organisations to enhance the well-being of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities, particularly the Bengali community, by developing sustainable community organisations.
Altab Ali Foundation participates in various anti-racist activities. It is committed to opposing racism, fascism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, fundamentalism, and all forms of extremism.
Since 2015, the Foundation has made itself accessible to others via this website.
